Employment

Driving a School Bus is a great part time job. The hours are flexible, and you get holidays and summers off. Some people elect to drive just mornings, or afternoons. You can drive just High School routes, or just Grade School routes. Some drivers elect to just drive extracurricular trips, others want to only fill in as a substitute driver when other drivers are taking extra trips, are away on vacation or are out with illness.

Morning High School routes start around 6:00 a.m. getting into the High School by 7:15 a.m. while morning Grade Schools are between 7 and 8:30 a.m. There is a possibility in some cases to do double routes, starting with a High School route and then going immediately to a grade route. Some Grade Schools run Kindergarten routes over the noon hour. Afternoon routes start at 2:30 p.m. for High School and at 3:00 p.m. for most Grade Schools. All of the routes take about and hour to complete. Some a little more, some a little less.

Extracurricular routes can be during the day for an hour or two, after school for sporting events for a few hours, or over the weekend for most of the day. There are also opportunities for evening and weekend charter work, when a local business will hire a school bus to take a group to a professional sporting event.

To drive a school bus, employees must have a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with School (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements. No experience is necessary as we will provide you with training to obtain your CDL. The training program requires approximately 10 hours depending on the trainee’s current skills and knowledge. Trainees will receive instruction on Safety procedures, school district and company policies and procedures, as well as actual behind-the-wheel training. All training manuals and forms are provided by Wittenberger Bus. A CDL can be obtained by the successful completion of a written exam, a pre-trip inspection and driving test, a medical exam and a road sign review.
